Under the iconic Big Top at the Santa Monica Pier, KOOZA is the exciting return of Cirque du Soleil. Since it first opened in 2007, KOOZA has been a hit all around the world. It has wowed nearly 8 million people with performances across 22 countries.

It's a dazzling display of acrobatic skill that celebrates the magic of the traditional circus. The performances are purely theatrical. Four contortionists forming cursive shapes, a high-wire performance with two bicycles, and the Wheel of Death, a rotating apparatus, are among the most remarkable acts. The shallow seats of the Big Top get audiences up close and personal with Kooza.. Unlike in the movies, the outcomes of the deeds are completely unpredictable. Will it be triumph or tragedy? (In the event that the latter occurs, anchors and safety nets are available.)

The Story

KOOZA ("box" in Sanskrit) opens with an enigmatic red wooden box that slides onstage to reveal a clown with rainbow stripes, like a jack-in-a-box. This is the Trickster, the Clown who uses tempting sights to taunt a naive schoolboy, the Innocent. During one of his kite-flying adventures, The Innocent receives this mysterious package and embarks on a voyage of self-discovery after being transported to a strange and exotic kingdom

The Cirque du Soleil Under the Big Top made its first United States debut at the opening of the Los Angeles Festival in 1987 along the stunning Santa Monica Pier. For many years, the Big Top Santa Monica has been the go-to spot for circus performances. Kooza will mark their first Santa Monica Pier performance since 2014.

Because fewer traveling circuses play under tents anymore, the skill of building big tops is a rare craft. Audiences may be surprised by how massive the Big Top is. The setting up of Cirque's tent takes seven days, a massive crew, and several advanced technological systems.
